Technology Transfer

Technology transfer is a broad set of processes covering the flows of know-how, experience and equipment for mitigating and adapting to climate change amongst different stakeholders such as governments, private sector entities, financial institutions, NGOs and research/education institutions.

Technology transfer is the transmission from one point to another of all the knowledge, tools, methods, and techniques necessary for the manufacturing of a product, the application of a process, or the delivery of a service. However, technology transfer is much more than the transfer of new technology hardware to developing countries. It is a process of innovation and learning and its effective management depends on generating new knowledge and having the capability to react quickly and effectively to change.

The broad and inclusive term "transfer" encompasses diffusion of technologies and technology co-operation across and within countries. It covers technology transfer processes between developed countries, developing countries and countries with economies in transition, amongst developed countries, amongst developing countries and amongst countries with economies in transition. It comprises the process of learning to understand, utilise and replicate the technology, including the capacity to choose and adapt to local conditions and integrate it with indigenous technologies.

This workshop presents general aspects of technology transfer, ways of stimulating the vertical and horizontal technology, and success stories of international technology transfer. It presents a powerful model for technology transfer that incorporates the role of governments, higher education and technical institutions, and industrial sector in technology transfer and development. The course discusses technology transfer policies, experiences and practices in various countries including Germany, UK, France, Italy, USA, Brazil, Japan, India and China.
